Istanbul : Where the Sun Rises from Asia
Istanbul : Where the Sun Rises from Asia
It is 5am in the morning on a rather chilly late September morning, the sky is clear yet dawn is still breaking. September in Istanbul sees the overnight temperatures drop quite considerably from the previous months of having a regular 20-30c plus. It is a cool 13c this morning wearing a jumper for the first time since leaving England in fact probably the first time since late April. Having adjusted to the above normal climate that I am used to back in England the drop below 20c is really noticeable and surprising.
[SinglePic not found] However when the dawn breaks it can be quite visually stunning and has I look out across the Bosphorus from home towards Asia the sun begins to rise in the distance a warm orange glow begins to shine above the hills of the Asian side on the Bosphorus. It is quite a stunning view with the minarets of the mosques dominating the skyline against the backdrop of the sun rising. The vast number of small fishing boats heading out to the Black Sea flow along the Bosphorus , they look incredibly small has the straight is occupied with large freight ships . The scene is incredibly surreal and almost dreamlike of a documentary of a daily life going on, that is the effect frequently you experience living here in Istanbul.
[SinglePic not found]These moments you really have to take in sit down and cherish the view , at this time of year the sunrise and sunset effects can change rapidly almost going from a pale yellow glow to a orange burst with a touch of purple in minutes. Whilst these are viewable in all parts of the world however the Minarets and the flickering lights from Asia add that touch off uniqueness to the moments. Much like the sunsets and sunrises you experience in many locations you visit whilst on holiday, the Bosphorus and the Asian hillsides offer you another unique setting. In Istanbul you can stand in Europe and watch the sun rise from Asia now where else in the world can that happen, it is another way of portraying Istanbul and the way it lies on two continents.
To sum up the extremes of this vast city lying on two continents is the weather variation across the city. Frequently during July and August 2009 I would leave home in Tarabya where it was a cool 27c however travelling say 5km or 10km across the city to say Besiktas suddenly I would be confronted with temperatures of 33c or higher. Also on September 23rd the news media stations were reporting of more flooding in an area called Borçka in Artvin and five loss of lives yet here in Tarabya,Istanbul no rain no wind just a chilly morning and a pleasant day with good sunshine.
So there we are enjoy the photographs there is more about my daily life in the Gallery at the top of the page .Thinking about Istanbul I often hear quotes of “was Constantinople” however try thinking was Byzantium and then Constantinople now Istanbul…
